In 2009 we needed to upgrade our sulfur capture by implementing our approximately $200 million Converter Retrofit Project (CRP) to improve our existing Pierce Smith Converters without invoking New Source Performance Standards (NSPS). We contracted with GCT to be our technology source and they ultimately designed the system to bring the Hayden Smelter into compliance with the NAAQS for SO2. Additionally, they helped us develop our operating strategies, negotiations with the regulatory community and startup/refining of operations. To the present they continue to help us with optimization and follow up on the new equipment. To me, they are my most valued resource in the overall environmental achievement at the Hayden Operations.

Our engagement with GCT goes back to 2007 when we started engaging them on environmental improvement projects. A feasibility study was done for improving the fume extraction system in the steel melting plant. GCT also provided the conceptual engineering which set the groundwork for the fume extraction project. The project was successful and overall improvement in the shop floor environment was very significant. Until present, we continue to have engagement with GCT on projects such as energy renewal, process optimization and gas cleaning upgrading. They have great professional staff with good knowledge base whom NatSteel always strive to work with when comes to environmental and process improvement projects.

Our facility has worked with GCT on a broad spectrum of initiatives including slab reheat furnace efficiency improvements, feasibility studies for waste heat to power conversion, an EAF off gas system optimization project, an integrated steel operations energy footprint optimization study. GCT offers strong competencies in process engineering and technology integration based on their heavy industry experience and orientation. Their work is thorough and thoughtful resulting in practical, financially sound solutions.
